Must try Apple Pie

It has been a while since you last heard from us – Wikihow are keeping us busy Photographing a large list of Vegan articles (I know barley an excuse right) but we are hoping to get back on track and bring you some of our vegan conquests over the next few weeks. We don’t have much experience when it comes to preparing vegan meals so some of the recipes we have prepared lately have been complete disasters in the taste department, but this Vegan apple pie is the real deal! It both looks and tastes the part – especially with a warm drizzle of caramel sauce over the top – so if you are vegan, or if you are entertaining vegan guests, this is an excellent and easy dessert to prepare.

This recipe uses vegan butter, vegan shortening, and unbleached vegan sugar to substitute the non-vegan ingredients in the traditional recipe

    Pie Crust
  • 2 sticks of vegan butter, cubed and chilled
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 2 1/4 cup pastry flour
  • 1/2 cup water, chilled
  • 1 tbsp. white sugar
  • Flour for the rolling surface
  • !Apple Filling
  • 3 large tart apples, sliced, cubed and cored
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon power
  • 1 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1 tsp. ginger powder
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 tbsp. lemon juice, freshly squeezed
  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 2 to 3 tbsp. maple syrup
  • Caramel Sauce
  • 1/2 cup apple cider
  • 1/2 cup vegan shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 tbsp. corn starch
  • Dash of ginger powder
  • Dash of cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1/4 tsp. vanilla extract


    Make the Pie Crust
  1. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F and grease the pie tin.
  2. Pulse the flour and salt in a food processor.
  3. Add the vegan butter and pulse the mixture together into beads of dry clumps. If you do not have a food processor, alternatively you can use a large fork to mix the ingredients together.
  4. Pour the pre-chilled water into the food processor a little at a time while pulsing the mixture.
  5. When about half the water has been transferred, also add a pinch of white sugar.
  6. Transfer the dough onto a well-floured cutting surface.
  7. Cut the dough in half and roll each half into a ball.
  8. Wrap the balls in plastic wrap and freeze for at least on hour. Dough can be frozen for up to 12 hours before continuing making the pie.
  9. Remove the dough from the freezer and roll out each half with a rolling pin on a floured surface to 1/4" thick.
  10. Transfer one half of the dough to a pie tin and mash the dough into the pie tin, filling the bottom and sides of the pie tin.
  11. Blind Bake your pie crust for 5-7 minutes, then remove baking beans and return to the oven for another 5 - 10mins
  12. Roll out the other half of the dough into a circle the depth of a thick pancake.
  13. Cut this dough into 6 to 8 lattice strips, each about 1 1/2" long and set aside. They will be used to cover the pie at the end.
  14. Make the Apple Filling
  15. Place the sliced or diced apples in the bowl along with the cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, salt, lemon juice, vanilla extract & maple syrup. Mix well.
  16. !Make the Caramel Sauce
  17. Stir the corn starch and cider together in medium sized pot until dissolved.
  18. Add the vegan shortening, sugar, ginger powder, cinnamon, salt and vanilla into the mixture.
  19. Boil the ingredients together, stirring frequently. As the mixture comes to a strong boil, quickly lower heat and stir until the mixture begins to thicken.
  20. Fold 2 tablespoons caramel sauce into the apples. Mix well.
  21. Put the remaining amount of sauce into the refrigerator and chill for 1 hour.
  22. Make the Pie
  23. Add the apples to the preheated pie crust.
  24. Cover the apple pie filling with the remaining strips of dough in a criss cross pattern.
  25. Sprinkle a dusting of sugar onto the crust bits.
  26. Bake the pie for 15 minutes at 425 degrees F. Lower the oven's temperature to 350 degrees and bake for an additional 20 minutes. Remove the pie from the oven when it has reached a golden brown color.
  27. Serving
  28. Heat the caramel sauce for about 5 minutes under low heat until warm. Drizzle the caramel sauce onto the pie and serve.

Cooking Tips

  • If the dough is too hard when you first take it out of the freezer, wait a few minutes for the dough to continue softening.
  • When the caramel sauce begins to boil, it’s important to watch it carefully so that it doesn’t overflow.
